NOTICE – Cessation of snow: 12am Monday, December 12

Village Code Article III:  Snow and Ice Removal requires that residents and businesses clear their sidewalks of snow and ice to a minimum width of 30 inches within 24 hours after cessation of every fall of snow. Please see this post for full details https://www.villageofnewpaltz.org/village-snow-ordinance-parking-during-snowstorms/

The official cessation of snowfall was 12am on 12/12/2022.

Village Snow Ordinance & Parking During Snowstorms

Village Code Article III:  Snow and Ice Removal prohibits the parking or standing of vehicles on village streets and parking lots from the time the accumulation of snow reaches a level of at least two inches until the street or parking lot has been fully plowed by the Department of Public Works. The ordinance also requires that residents and businesses clear their sidewalks of snow and ice to a minimum width of 30 inches within 24 hours after cessation of every fall of snow.

ATTENTION VEHICLE OWNERS:
To help get vehicles off Village streets during snowstorms so our Department of Public Works (DPW) may safely clear roadways, free overnight parking is available before storms and for 24 hours after the snow has stopped in the Huguenot Street municipal lot that leads to the Gardens for Nutrition and the Village sewer plant. The lot currently includes 29 spaces that are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Subsequently, the DPW will begin plowing the Huguenot Street lot 24 hours after the snow has stopped and any vehicles still in the lot at that time will risk being ticketed and towed.

Shoveling out one’s vehicle and making sure it is removed from the Huguenot Street lot before DPW plowing commences, regardless of a storm’s size, will be the sole responsibility of vehicle owners and not the Village DPW.

At any time, vehicles that block the thoroughfare on the left (west) side of the Huguenot Street lot heading towards the sewer plant risk being ticketed and towed immediately.

Capital Planning & Naming Trucks Contest

CAPITAL PLANNING

Our administration maintains a list of our 23 taxpayer-owned pieces of heavy equipment and trucks, ranked by when we believe replacements should be made. We monitor the age and condition of our largest pieces to anticipate future capital expenditures. The Village’s outside risk management consultant has reported that our fleet is in better than expected shape because our DPW staff uses an “unusual degree of care” maintaining vehicles.
Five of our 14 diesel vehicles/equipment have been replaced since 2016. We have done this without raising taxes.
At Wednesday’s Village Board meeting, we approved the request from our DPW to enter into an agreement to order/purchase a 2024 Western Star plow/salt truck with a hook lift system body for $312,298. Its estimated build date is January 2024 and we will not begin paying until FY ’23-’24 or ’24-’25. This truck will replace our well worn 24 year old 1998 Chevy dump truck whose parts have become limited or unavailable.
We are especially excited to replace this ‘98 Chevy with an updated lower emissions truck. Our five recent replacements were all lower emissions equipment. We have tried to secure grant assistance via the EPA Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program but have yet to be successful, so all our upgrades have been funded with local taxpayer funding.

NAMING TRUCKS CONTEST

It’s clear we live amongst many creatives who enjoy wordplay so we felt it made sense to try to harness some of that spirit by hosting our own truck naming contest like the Minnesota DOT’s: https://www.dot.state.mn.us/nameasnowplow/
The Village of New Paltz has nine DPW staff who plow snow and they each use a different truck on their respective routes. We would like to name each of these plow trucks. See their pictures for inspiration.
Please feel free to make suggestions via email to: comments@villageofnewpaltz.org.
  • Submissions are limited to no more than 30 characters (including letters and spaces).
  • Any submissions that include hatefulness or inappropriate language will be deleted.
  • Naming trucks is meant to be fun and lighthearted, so please be thoughtful and considerate when submitting.
  • Submission deadline Friday 12/31/22, 11:59pm
Contest winners from Minnesota DOT (for inspiration): Betty Whiteout, Ctrl Salt Delete, The Big Leplowski, Plowasaurus Rex, Scoop Dogg, Blizzard of Oz, No More Mr. Ice Guy, Edward Blizzardhands, Plowy McPlowFace, “Ope, Just Gonna Plow Right Past Ya”, Duck Duck Orange Truck, Plow Bunyan, Snowbi Wan Kenobi, F. New Paltz 2030:  Our Climate Action Plan Survey

Our Climate Smart Task Force has created a survey. Please read and take a few minutes to respond:
Concerned about climate change?  Want to improve the quality of life in New Paltz?
Did you know that in one year the New Paltz community creates 72,116 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions (1 metric ton = 2,204 lbs)?  That’s 11,353 lbs for every man, woman,
and child living here.  As in the rest of the country, transportation is the single largest contributor. We can work together to find ways our community can reduce those numbers.  The Town and Village of New Paltz are developing a Community Climate Action Plan as a roadmap for making informed decisions and understanding where and how to achieve the largest and most cost-effective emissions reductions that are in alignment with other municipal goals. But we need your input and opinion!  What do you think should be done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions here in New Paltz?
Also attached is our informational flyer with the QR code if that is helpful.   Feel free to print and post it at your business, school or place of work.
Please share this with your New Paltz friends and neighbors!
Thank you
